World Cup News

Brazil won its game against Ghana today 3-0 and made it into the quarterfinals (not really that big of a surprise for the Cup favorites). Even bigger news is that Rolando scored his 15 World Cup goal, making him the all-time World Cup scoring leader. Congratulations to Rolando and the rest of the Brazilian soccer team.

It's in my comments to the World Cup Firefox Extension. But some more is needed; it's true. Germany beat Sweden 2-0 on Saturday. Ever since their first game in which they allowed 2 goals, Germany's defense has really stepped up while their offense has continued to play well. They play Argentina next on June 30, 9:00 AM.

Quick note: if you can get to http://www.espn360.com, you can watch the games live. Seems to work better in IE than Firefox.

YEAH BRAZIL! GO ALL THE WAY! HEXA!

Now I have never met an RM who served in South America that ever extolled anything, and I am therefore disinclined to believe James on that point. Finding virtue down there is like trying to find a sports jock in the Talmage building. I think James is just angry about the last Cup when Germany got their spleen handed to them.

I'm glad that France beat Spain because the Spain team was full of moronic hairdos and their coach is a pompous idiot. Good riddance. They never deserved to play with the big boys anyway.

Now for this big Argentina vs Germany game I'm going to be rooting for Germany. I think Germany should go to the final game. I never liked that Maradona moron. And besides, Argentina is a big rival for Brazil. If Brazil doesn't make it, I'd really rather that Germany won.

The Brazil vs Ghana game showed that Brazil really needs to think a little more about defense, but there were some close ones from Ghana. This next game versus France should be a big defining game for Brazil.

On another note, don't you guys get sick and tired of hearing and reading announcers' comments and opinions about how this team "deserved to win" or that team "didn't deserve to lose"? I know I do. It's as if they don't think that the game of soccer should be decided by goals. As if it should be up to the discretion of the commentators as to what team they think "deserves" to win. Nobody "deserves" anything. If you make more goals, you win. Deal with it.

I haven't noticed that trend. The only people I know who are Brazil fans are guys like me who have served a mission there or other people who are connected in some other way (like my wife, whose brother served in Brazil as well and he happens to be there right now getting ready to marry a Brazilian).

If you look over at James or Jason then you'll see some good Germany fans for the same reasons. My brother is serving in the Berlin mission right now and so there's no doubt who he's rooting for. If Germany ends up playing and beating Brazil, then he and I will be rivals for life (every four years of course).

Most Americans (like me) probably don't see much point in going crazy for the US team, since they haven't yet figured out how to play the game. So if you're an American and you want to experience the excitement of the World Cup, then you have to decide who your favorite foreign country is going to be. For those who have served missions in foreign countries, it's an easy choice.

I don't know the answer to this for sure, but didn't Germany get pretty far in the last World Cup? Like the quarterfinals or something?

He knows that.

Chew on this for a little bit. Keep in mind that the final game was on June 30, 2002.

Actually, I had no idea that Germany got to finals in 2002. I might've known about it at the time (seems the game was about 1 month before I came home), but I can't even remember if I knew or not. So, thanks for letting me know that Brazil beat them...makes some other comments seem more relevant.

Haha, I can't believe you found that, Ryan. Thanks for the link...I hadn't updated that profile in over 2 years.

I'd have to disagree completely with the SA Elders in your quorum. They probably said it was easy and great because all they did was go around and baptize little kids and teenage girls who never came to church. There's a big problem with dumb Elders in South America that are only concerned with numbers. I witnessed it first hand.

I'm comment number 20! We've hit a new world record! Go Brazil!

I noticed that James has a l337 p1c7ur3 now. Right on.

I already knew that Jason served in the Germany Frankfurt mission from 2000 to 2002. I've worked with him at OIT (on the student financial applications team) and I've taken classes with him at Brigham Young University. I've known him for a while and done various other things with him (like Physucks parties, man those were fun). I didn't have to do a Google search to figure out that he served a mission in Germany. But I'll tell you right now that Germany must not be nearly as crazy about the World Cup as Brazil is, because you'd have to be deaf, blind, and mentally handicapped (yes, all three) to serve in Brazil in the World Cup and not know exactly what was going on. That whole thing was an experience I'm not very likely to forget for the rest of my entire life, even though the actual Cup was held on the other side of the world.

Further clarification: Germany wasn't just in the finals. Germany was completely undefeated until they met Brazil in the FINAL World Cup Game on June 30. Everybody made fun of us missionaries that day because they all think that the Elders are Germans. I had to attach a Brazilian flag to my bag just so that everyone would shut up. Germany has a good chance to take it this time. I hope they at least beat Argentina.

Just because I don't remember much about the 2002 World Cup doesn't mean that Germany doesn't go nuts about their games. I'm sure you can find many people who could successfully argue about me being deaf, blind, and mentally handicapped...
